Schipperke

The Schipperke is affectionate and loyal towards their owners, but is very wary of strangers. They love to bark, making them excellent watchdogs.

These small dogs are alert, busy and very inquisitive and require regular socialising to be tolerant of unknown dogs, if not you could face problems on long walks.

Size: 22-33 cm (8.5-13 in)

Coat: Abundant, harsh and very dense

Colour: Usually black and could well be any other whole colour

Special Characteristics

These lovely dogs absolutely love to play, they are alert and watchful. You would also describe this breed of dog to be lively, amenable, responsive, loyal and inquisitive.

Exercise Requirements

These dogs are classed as having high exercise requirements. The dog will be busy at home and when outside, will need at least two long walks each day to stay happy and content.

Attitude Towards:

Owners: Are loyal, devoted and very affectionate towards their owners.

Children: Usually good around children if raised with them.

Other Pets: May be problematic with small pets in the home.

Strangers: Are territorial and will be wary of any strangers that come into their home.

Other Unfamiliar Dogs: Can be problematic, will have to be well socialised from a young age to be tolerable of unknown dogs on walks.

What to Watch Out For

These dogs love to bark and are known for barking excessively. There is also a good chance that the dog will be difficult to house train. Their dense coat needs regular grooming to keep it in good condition.

Health Risks

These dogs have seven health risks to take note of including; hip problems, Legg-Calve-Perthes, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy and hypoglycaemia.

Ideal Owner

The perfect owner of the Schipperke should be very active and affectionate who enjoys grooming and has lots of time available for activities, exercise and training at home.
