Small Dogs Good with Other Pets

Below is a list of all small dogs that are good around other pets in the house. Predatory behaviour is natural to certain small dog breeds and will not be good left alone with small pets.

It is advised to get a dog with weak predatory instincts if you have small pets in your home. It is best to avoid terriers and other breeds that have been trained to hunt, they are very unlikely to get along with small pets like cats.

Which Pets are these Dogs Good With?

The Beagle will bond with every member of your family including the other pets that you have in the household. Beagles do not like to be alone and would love to have a cat around the house to be friendly with.

The Border Terrier is good with other cats and dogs that they have been raised with. They are more suited to dogs of the opposite sex. They should not be trusted home alone with super small pets like birds, hamsters and rabbits.

The Boston Terrier will be okay with all other small pets around the home, particularly if they are introduced to them from an early age.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi work really well with other pets in the house, be sure to introduce them to each animal bit by bit and you will not have any problems with this breed.

The Maltese will only get along with other pets in the house if they have been raised and introduced to other animals from an early age. If you are getting an aged dog this needs to be one of your questions, ask if the dog is familiar with other cats or birds for example.

The Pekingese are okay with other Pekingese dogs and are unsure about other dog breeds and other unfamiliar animals unless they have been raised with them.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is normally good with all other pets in the house. Just make sure you introduce them to each other under supervision on first contact, everything should be okay.

The Poodle my not be great with other pets if they have not socialised with them very often before. With time, however, the Poodle can and in most cases will accept other pets in the household.

The Pug is great around all other small pets like birds, cats and hamsters and is even great around other dogs in the house. The Pug will revel in having another dog around the home to play with, or another cat.

The Shetland Sheepdog will get along with other small pets in the home particularly cats, however they only really get along with other dogs of the same breed.

The Silky Terrier loves to play and chase after small animals so will not necessarily be well suited to homes with small pets like cats, hamsters or birds. The Silky will get along with other dogs in the house, as long as they have been introduced to other dogs from an early age.
